OUR BROKEN CISTERNS

“For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” (Jer 2:13)

A cistern was an artificial reservoir which was dug in the earth or hewn in the rock for the collection and storage of water.

Cisterns were very important in the land of Israel because of the long dry season and the relatively few natural springs. But a broken cistern was practically worthless.

Cracked rock or leaking cistern could hold only a small quantity of dirty water, or no water at all. Prophet Jeremiah used the illustration of broken cisterns to point up the extreme foolishness of God’s people, Israel.

They neglected the Godly instituted ways and tried to satisfy their spiritual hunger by following ways of those who had no knowledge of their God. Today’s message was rebuke to people who were no longer totally committed to their God.

They had turned away from the Fountain of living waters and were looking everywhere else for something to quench their spiritual thirst.

Haven’t we likewise forsaken our Godly mandate and tried to satisfy our spiritual hunger by building broken cisterns. These broken cisterns could be anything from the constructions, investments, pursuit of wealth, welfares you name it. But all these cannot hold the real quenching water of life.

This is true of every cistern of our own making. Self-made attempts and schemes designed to find spiritual fulfillment apart from what the Lord commanded will inevitably result in failure, they are doomed from the start.

We must uphold the true cisterns that never run dry of supplying the true quenching water of life. We can prepare for the long dry spell by staying by the True cistern.

When we begin the year with fasting, we are able to identify our broken cisterns and come back to total whole dependence on God alone. It’s disastrous for our digging efforts to result in an empty, broken cistern!

Come back to the life refreshing, quenching and satisfying water of life!
